A Baltimore Club Legend Passes Away

This Weekend Baltimore Lost DJ K Swift (92Q)

When you hear the news of certain people passing, sometimes we immediately go into denial. I felt that way three times in my life. My grandparents dying, Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) and now RIP K Swift. Many of Bmore will never be the same. Our prayers and condolences goes out to her family and friends.

Defining Art In Baltimore: Lisa Rowley

So I decided to spend some time on the local art scene this week. I came across a site that made me proud to be from Bmore. Allow me to introduce Lisa Rowley. She has been a contemporary abstract painter for the last 20 years, and have lived in such fantastic cities as New Orleans and Florence Italy. When you need to remind yourself what beauty lies in our city look here.

My Club Space

So what do you get when you mix My Space and Club music???

Raising Clay Street

Every once in awhile you hear, see or read something that makes you think ....Damn why isn't the News covering this story. I reflected on that for a minute and remembered that I had a blog. No matter how big or small, I had a voice and could do something.
While 99% of us are working to that comfort level to even start thinking of giving back, that 1% is actively doing it.

The project/movement is "I Live On Clay Street " authored by Timmy Grins, who recently relocated to Annapolis, Md some time back. The idea is a throwback when neighbors spent time outdoors, on the streets of their blocks, instead of behind locked doors and peeping out of window curtains.
The "Clay Street Supper Club" is a pot luck steered at regaining drug infested corners with community pride. How simple, breaking bread with your fellow residents discussing how it was and how it could be. Or is it really?

What if each neighborhood followed his lead? What if your Grandmother's house was as safe for your kids as it was for you growing up? I have known Grins now for some years, and can say this....If you have the passion and determination, he has an outlined plan for success. Hats off from the 41YO for being a leader.

Emajor Gets 3.5 Questies out of 5

Well if you know me , you know I been building with my man EMajor since way back. Here is a review from Okay Player. Shameless plug...the track "Got It Goin On" is produced by DJ Excel....

E Major
Majority Rules
Under Sound Music; 2008

It’s like Q-Tip said, “You can be white and cool but don’t crack the roll.” Most of Majority Rules unfolds like Premo produced a solo album for Prime Minister Pete Nice. And yeah, that means it’s tight. E Major sounds like he’d be right at home dipped low in a leather office chair speaking real words out the side of his mouth waving a cane in one hand with a cigar gripped tight in the other. The brother from Baltimore rocks a healthy swagger without coming off as an asshole, check the lead single and video “Nuthin’ Nice” (feat. Hezekiah) for evidence.

Overall, E Major’s nonchalance blends perfectly into the textured beats Majority Rules is blessed with. Hints of jazzy Tribe and moody Bootcamp sneak into the mix but it’s a soulful cohesiveness that bonds the album like Stucco. E’s flow, laid back but memorable, DL but dope, floats nicely atop the classic snap of “The Next Episode” and the hand drum sampling, up jumps the boogie jam “Know That.” “Seasons Change” is the sentimental jawn of the bunch but the sinister piano stabs and dirty drums of “We Got It Goin’ On” provide requisite balance. And again, just because dude can groove with his production doesn’t mean his lines don’t bite. E Major is still “out for scratch like cat fights.”

At the end of the night, I don’t know if the Under Sound Music CEO / premiere artist is really shattering any establishments. This is good old soulful northeastern hip-hop with attitude. Playing the devil’s av’, E Major jabs, “He’s old school, his style’s irrelevant / Oh, he’s a backpacker cuz his lack of melanin.” But color doesn’t have anything to do with it. Plain and simple, this is one of the better bread and butter rap records I’ve heard in a minute.

A Baltimore Weekend

So I am craving my favorite eat spot, Sushi San in Canton. They have the best sushi ever.I arrive at 1pm and Start off with the house salad with sesame seed dressing. Right into the Snow White roll and a Terp roll. Just what the doctor ordered. I then get the urge for some new vinyl. I drive down the street to Fells Point to stop into SoundGarden. They carry a great little section of club and hip hop. I am surprised to see the "Baltimore Club" section is growing....TWO ROWS NOW!!! I flashback to Bernie's store "Music LIberated" that was floors of club :( RIP BERNIE!!! So I come back to my small selection and happiness return as I remember for a brief moment of only two records here months before. It the selection are newcomers Tittsworth & Ayres, Some A Trak, New Technics reprints, DJ Booby, Scottie B's Money Lotion, and Bird Peterson. The section is growing but filled primarily with out of towners.
WHERE IS BMORE PRODUCERS AT? Georgia, NY...who said that??? Its true many club producers have relocated out of town. And I understand 100%. So I comeback from a 90's Bmore flashback and see some new
records I gotta have. Since I was diggin for breaks I am not going to reveal the names but they were definitely worth the price tag. I roll out of there to the packed tourists stumbling around for the St Patty Day festivities. The traffic uggggghhh. (to be continued)

Baltimore Artist Update- ABROCK

WHADDUP ROCKMICS FAM

AB THOUGHTS

Psst..hey Fam, wanna share some exciting news with you....

I've been working on my sophomore album "The Mid MidLife Crisis" for a while (shut up Femi!!!...lol) and proud to announce that I'm finally done! Probably been my most challenging and emotionally invested project. Unlike other projects, I just didn't write the songs, I lived each and every one of them. The album was my audio diary as I faced my "quarterlife" experience, and I hope other folks going through it can gain something useful. Not to mention the fact that it's a solid brand of dope Grown Folk HipHop/Music.

Sometime we artists, tend to think of our project as extensions of ourselves, sort of like our children... well if that's the case, my baby got some good clothes on, and I'm ready to share it with world!!!

Rockmics Entertainment proudly presents AbRock's sophomore album "The Mid MidLife Crisis" available 4/2/2008.

To everyone who has been on the journey with me for the last couple of years, I appreciate your support and hope you continue to support the project. You can listen to select tracks via myspace: www.myspace.com/rockmics

Not Your Average Record Label

Well finding things on the net is the modern day treasure hunt. Well we found a hidden gem for you. DJ Excel from Baltimore has a site called BmoreOriginal.com.
On the site there is a cool streamlined player that plays high quality mixes from "Bmore Original Radio". You can find underground hip hop from artists you forgot about like "The Lords Of The Underground,& Miilkbone, to the new and upcoming stars like Braille,Marco Polo,& The Lyricists. Wait it gets better there is actual Baltimore Club mixes that you can download. We found that DJ Excel does these Bmore Club mixes and features dj's from around the world that mix Baltimore Club. There is a great mix up under the "Down Low" mix series from DJ Impact from France. If you wanna here the local talent, DJ Excel even has a series called "Homegrown" that features Baltimore artists like Abrock, Unreal, Minlus N McCracken. I spent nearly 5 hours on here. There is so much dope content. Another feature was the radio style interviews. The shows are a full 1/2 hour with in depth interviews with artists while mixing in their newest arts of work. For those that are looking to buy Baltimore Club tracks, you find a great selection under the download section. Over all I give it 4 out 5. The reason I didn't give it a 5 is the overall site style could use a facelift.

EMajor - Majority Rules 4-1-08

Monday, March 10, 2008

Keeping up with style, you can't help but think of E Major and his sneaker game. We heard his new album entitled "Majority Rules" will be released April 1st, 2008. It features a pretty good roster of Bmore top talent, not to mention his single "Nuthin Nice"featuring Hezekiah (Rawkus Records) that he shot a video for earlier in the year. The album will be a free digital download with links available on his My Space page. There will be a release party to hear the new joints live @ Fletchers.

On that note we will leave you with his video "Nuthin Nice" prduced by Hilton Carter.

Did Obama Make a Difference by visiting Bmore?

Well presidential front runner Barack Obama stopped by Baltimore last month(Feb 11th). Apparently it wasn't to cop a bootleg of The Wire finale. My question to Bmore is this:Do the presidential candidates that actually come here to talk to the people effect your vote?
Here is what Barack had to say during his visit...

Fresh Out The Box

Well fresh out the box like a pair of Air Force ones. Ahhh the simple must haves of a Bmore native. Lets check in and see whats new in the 410 this week.

The picture shown above is the preview sample of the upcoming Nike Air Force 1 XXV Supreme Baltimore Series “Baltimore Dome
